Chapter 16 · 16.3
Restoring a DirectAdmin backup
A backup you made with Backup and Restore (see Backup and Restore: creating your own backup in DirectAdmin) is restored on the same screen. This overwrites the current state of whatever you choose. So read this article in full before you start.
Please note: Restoring overwrites what's currently there. Files, mail or databases that you've added or changed after making the backup may disappear. Not sure? Use WebOké Backups instead (see Can I also do this in My WebOké? WebOké Backups). There you can first have a safety backup made, restore only what's missing, or place the backup as a copy alongside your current site.
Restoring
- In the menu, under Advanced Features, click Backup and Restore.
- Click the Restore Backup tab (1).
- Under Backup, choose the backup file (2). The list shows the backups from the backups folder of your package. Use View current backups to see them all at once.
- Under Options, tick which parts you want to restore. By default, everything is ticked. You don't have to restore everything: for example, leave only Database Data ticked if you only want to restore your databases.
- Click RESTORE BACKUP at the bottom. The restore is added to the queue, and you'll get a notification in Message Area when it's done.

If there are no backups in the folder, you'll see No backups available with the CREATE BACKUP button.
Restoring a backup from your computer
Downloaded a backup and want to restore it? First upload the file with File Manager to the backups folder of your package (see Uploading and downloading files). After that, you'll see it on the Restore Backup tab. For large files, it's best to upload with an FTP program (see Verbinden met FileZilla (FTP, FTPS en SFTP)).
Do you have a backup from another provider or from a different package? Get in touch with us first. A backup from a different account doesn't always fit straight onto your package, and we're happy to help you with a move.
Frequently asked questions
I want just one file back, not everything. Backup and Restore restores whole components, such as all your website files at once. If you want just one file or one folder back, use WebOké Backups instead: there you can browse through the backup and tick only what you need (see Can I also do this in My WebOké? WebOké Backups). Alternatively, extract the backup file on your computer and upload just the one file.
Restoring a database times out. It's better to restore a large database via WebOké Backups, or with phpMyAdmin or an import (see Importing a database, including large files).
My website doesn't work after restoring. Check whether you've restored both the files and the databases from the same point in time. A site with today's files and last month's database often doesn't work properly. If you can't figure it out, please open a ticket.
