Chapter 14 · 14.9
Connecting your own AI to your Nextcloud
Besides the AI Assistant in Nextcloud (AI Assistant in your Nextcloud), there's a second way to use AI: connecting your own AI chat, such as ChatGPT, Claude or Le Chat, to your Nextcloud. Then you can ask your AI app, for example: What appointments do I have tomorrow? or Find Jansen's quote and summarise it.
Tip: this connection works with Nextcloud Family and Max: the package page then shows the Connect your own AI card. A detailed explanation per AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Le Chat) is available in our knowledge base article Connecting your own AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Le Chat) to your Nextcloud.
How it works
- The AI acts as your Nextcloud user and never sees more than you can see yourself.
- Your password never reaches us or the AI app. You log in to your own Nextcloud and grant access there.
- You choose per component what the AI is allowed to do: read only (look up and summarise) or also write (create or change things). Read only is on by default.
- When changing or deleting something, your AI app first asks for your permission. Deleted files go to Deleted files in Nextcloud and can be restored.
For the package owner
On the Connect your own AI card, you decide what an AI on your package is allowed to do at most, switch the connection on or off for the whole package, and see who has connected which AI. Use Revoke to stop a connection immediately. If someone connects an AI on your package, you'll receive an email about it.
Revoking a connection as a user
A connection appears in Nextcloud as a device. You revoke it under Settings, Security, in the list of devices and sessions. See Viewing, revoking, or remotely wiping devices and sessions.
Privacy
What the AI reads goes to the AI service you use yourself and falls under your own agreement with that service. We don't store any content from your files. If you want everything to stay in the EU, use Le Chat by Mistral.
